Experience the beauty of Japanese calligraphy in a hands-on workshop led by Japanese artist TAISAN. Learn traditional brush techniques, create your own artwork, and take home a meaningful piece of Japanese culture.

Join Japanese artist TAISAN for an intimate introduction to traditional Japanese calligraphy (Shodō) and ink painting.

Whether you’re a complete beginner or simply curious about Japanese art and culture, this workshop offers a relaxing and creative experience where you’ll learn basic brush techniques and create your own artwork to take home.

TAISAN TANAKA

Taisan is a contemporary Japanese calligrapher and Ink painter known for his dynamic live performances and modern reinterpretation of traditional brushwork. Based in New York City, Taisan has captivated audiences around the world with his bold visual language and heartfelt expression through ink.

He began his artistic career in Tokyo in 2000, and his work quickly gained recognition through numerous exhibitions at galleries and museums across Japan. His groundbreaking calligraphy style—mojiface (also known in Japan as Emoji, or “smiling characters”)—transforms Japanese characters into expressive visual art. Since launching his mojiface classes in 2009, more than 3,000 students have participated annually, with some going on to become certified instructors and ambassadors of the style.

In 2011, following the devastating earthquake and tsunami in the Tohoku region, Taisan was invited by Japan’s Ministry of Defense to perform a live calligraphy piece in front of American and Japanese officials as a gesture of thanks to the U.S. military. The word he chose was “Gratitude”—a powerful expression of connection, humility, and shared humanity.

Taisan relocated to New York City in 2015, where he continues to create and perform internationally. His solo exhibitions and calligraphy performances have been featured in prominent cultural venues across Europe, including Frankfurt (Germany), Oviedo (Spain), and Stockholm (Sweden), among others.

At the heart of Taisan’s artistic mission is a deep desire to make Japanese calligraphy more accessible and joyful. By blending tradition with innovation, he invites people around the world to experience the beauty of writing—redefining calligraphy not as something intimidating or archaic, but as a vibrant, emotional, and deeply human form of expression.

We are honored to present “ZEN: Gratitude in Motion” — A Solo Exhibition by TAISAN             

JEWELL HOUSE is proud to present Gratitude in Motion, a solo exhibition by contemporary Japanese calligrapher and ink painter Taisan.

Based in New York City, Taisan is known for his dynamic live performances and modern reinterpretation of traditional Japanese calligraphy. His practice bridges heritage and innovation, transforming brushwork into a living, expressive language that carries emotion, energy, and presence.

Beginning his artistic journey in Tokyo in 2000, Taisan quickly gained recognition through exhibitions across Japan, later developing his signature style mojiface, a visual language that transforms Japanese characters into expressive, human-centered forms. Through this practice, language becomes image, and writing becomes an emotional experience rather than a fixed form.

In 2011, following the Great East Japan Earthquake, Taisan was invited by Japan’s Ministry of Defense to perform a live calligraphy piece in front of American and Japanese officials as a gesture of gratitude to the U.S. military. The chosen word, “Gratitude,” reflects the essence of his work, connection, humility, and shared humanity expressed through movement and ink.

Since relocating to New York City in 2015, Taisan has continued to expand his practice internationally through exhibitions and live performances across Europe and beyond. His work invites audiences to experience calligraphy not as tradition alone, but as something immediate, emotional, and alive.

For this special opening night at JEWELL HOUSE, TAISAN will be performing an exclusive live painting experience at 7:30pm, transforming the space through the energy of movement, ink, and presence. Each gesture becomes part of a fleeting moment shared between artist and audience, an unrepeatable expression of gratitude in real time.

At the conclusion of the performance, the completed live painting, valued at $1,500 will be gifted to one lucky guest selected through a random drawing during the Opening Reception evening.

Through this exhibition, Taisan shares a simple yet powerful message: expression is most alive when it is felt, not just written. Each stroke becomes a moment of presence—an unfolding of energy between body, breath, and emotion.

An OSHO Zen Tarot session is not about fortune-telling or predicting the future.

It’s a space for tuning into one’s true inner voice and offering love to oneself.

The cards serve as messengers from the subconscious, delivering insights that go beyond logic.

Rather than analyzing from the mind, these sessions explore through inspiration, helping uncover what the subconscious is trying to communicate—what messages are needed in the present moment, and what outdated beliefs or thought patterns may be ready to be released.

The practitioner, Sonomi Kobayashi herself has experienced many moments of realization through OSHO Zen Tarot, letting go of unnecessary mental burdens and finding greater ease in moving forward.

What began as a personal journey gradually expanded as she practiced with friends and referrals. The responses were heartening—many shared that they felt “lighter,” “like things were shifting in a positive direction,” or “refreshed and clear-headed.”

These reactions inspired her to share this practice with even more people.

Now, she is offering sessions at Jewell House, inviting those who feel a connection to take part.

Instructor: SONOMI KOBAYASHI

A Japanese native, Sonomi Kobayashi is a New York-based artist and art educa- tor. She received a Four-Year Certificate from The Art Students League in Paint- ing, where she also studied printmaking and sculpture. Her work has been exhib- ited frequently in the US, Japan, and Europe.

She currently teaches at The Art Students League, as well as at Art Center for Seniors at Emanu-El, and occasionally teaches art to children and adults in NYC Parks community program since 2013. In 2019, the Mayoral Service Recognition Program awarded her a Certificate of Appreciation for her outstanding efforts.

Sonomi is also a certified Reiki Master and Access Bars Practitioner.

At this level the student is attuned and connected to the reiki source of energy. They will be capable of healing themselves and others who are present with you.
We cover history of Reiki and learn about applications of Reiki, receive an attunement and practice doing Reiki on yourself and others amongst participants. You will also learn to do your daily cleansing and the way you connect with Reiki. You leave class with a manual, first degree certificate including your lineage, trained to do Reiki on yourself, others, plants and animals.

What is Reiki?

The word “Reiki” has already existed in the late 19th century in Japan to describe Spiritual Life Force Energy that is applied for healing.
Man called Dr. Usui established a method to gather that life force energy after rigorous spiritual and buddhism studies and practices. He had a healing clinic and helped a number of people. Dr. Usui and his disciples established the Reiki treatment method over the years.
Now, more and more people are attuned to Reiki and experiencing it. Because Reiki is not like an organized Religion, it’s interpreted much more freely and adapted to global cultures, it does feel more flexible.
Similar healing methods have been in existence for ages all over the world wherever human cultures exist.
Many manuals mention that Reiki is Uni-versal but plenty of people who experience Reiki feel Multi- versal realities. The way that accesses your past and future, places, other-worldly visions and sensations in a moment shows us that Reiki is about limitless potential.

About Daria
Born in Kyoto, grew up in Yokohama, Japan.
I spent my youth days admiring modern art and daydreaming. Plenty of years have passed since I moved to the US.
I started to study Reiki when we all had chaotic experiences in the US, especially in NYC in 2001. When I joined a group session for the very first time, as soon as a Reiki practitioner started run the Reiki, I felt a jolt of electric current and vision of a spark flying out of my chest area. I became more curious to find what that’s all about and eventually got certified as a Reiki master/teacher in 2002. Over the years, I have added Kundalini Reiki, Green Tara Seichim, Silver Violet Flame, and Access Bars and other energy works to my practice.

Join us to create a beautiful Shimenawa wreath, a traditional Japanese decoration used to welcome good fortune and prosperity for the New Year. Shimenawa, crafted from sacred straw rope, symbolizes purification and protection, and is commonly displayed at home entrances.

In this hands-on workshop, we’ll guide you in making a custom Shimenawa wreath adorned with preserved and dried flowers, which, with proper care, will last well beyond the holiday season. You can create a traditional look or customize the colors to match your home’s decor. After the New Year, you can remove the Shimenawa base and repurpose the arrangement for year-round decor as you wish.

Shimenawa and Mizuhiki cords are specially imported from Japan, ensuring an authentic experience. The Shimenawa wreath itself will measure approximately 9 inches/22cm in diameter, but the overall size will be larger once you add your floral arrangement, which will vary based on your design.

Please note that example photos are provided for inspiration; your finished wreath will be uniquely yours and may vary based on your chosen colors and arrangements. All materials are provided, and you’ll take home your handcrafted wreath at the end of the session. Reserve your spot soon—space is limited!

Instructor: Hijiri Shepherd

Hijiri owns and designs at Heartfish Press (http://www.heartfishpress.com), a studio located in Brooklyn, NY, specializing in letterpress printing and floral design. The studio offers a variety of letterpress prints, cards, and custom design services that involve creating floral designs using dried flowers.

Hijiri studied graphic design in Tokyo and pursued art direction at a university in San Francisco. After completing her studies, she worked as an art director at an advertising agency. In 2008, she moved to New York City and started working as a freelance designer. It was during this time that she discovered her passion for letterpress printing and the joy of crafting handmade items, which motivated her to establish her own business. Recently, Hijiri has been devoting a lot of her creative energy to exploring the art of dried flower arrangement, and she has developed a deep love for this craft along the way.

JEWELL HOUSE is proud to present One Fine Day, a solo exhibition by Shu Tu.
Inspired by Lao Zi’s words, “Nature does not rush, yet everything is accomplished,” this body of work offers a quiet response to the relentless pace of modern life. Through ceramic paintings and vessels, the artist explores the beauty of stillness and the profound grace found in the ordinary.

One Fine Day invites us to pause to soften our focus and notice the gentle rhythm of everyday life: a single bloom along a sidewalk, the unfolding of a petal, or the effortless harmony of a garden shaped by nature’s quiet design. Each piece was born from moments of still presence, where creation emerged not from urgency, but from attentive calm.

During the holiday season a time often filled with noise, pressure, and expectation—this exhibition offers a space for reflection and grounding. Amid the gatherings and lists, One Fine Day reminds us that presence itself is the greatest gift we can give.

Through this meditative collection, Shu Tu shares a simple yet profound truth: nothing needs to be more than it already is. Wholeness exists in the smallest gestures, and sometimes, a glimpse of quiet beauty is all it takes to make it one fine day.

Now, more and more people are attuned to Reiki and experiencing it. Because Reiki is not like an organized Religion, it’s interpreted much more freely and adapted to global cultures, it does feel more flexible.
Similar healing methods have been in existence for ages all over the world wherever human cultures exist.
Many manuals mention that Reiki is Uni-versal but plenty of people who experience Reiki feel Multi- versal realities. The way that accesses your past and future, places, other-worldly visions and sensations in a moment shows us that Reiki is about limitless potential.

About Daria
Born in Kyoto, grew up in Yokohama, Japan.
I spent my youth days admiring modern art and daydreaming. Plenty of years have passed since I moved to the US.
I started to study Reiki when we all had chaotic experiences in the US, especially in NYC in 2001. When I joined a group session for the very first time, as soon as a Reiki practitioner started run the Reiki, I felt a jolt of electric current and vision of a spark flying out of my chest area. I became more curious to find what that’s all about and eventually got certified as a Reiki master/teacher in 2002. Over the years, I have added Kundalini Reiki, Green Tara Seichim, Silver Violet Flame, and Access Bars and other energy works to my practice.

This workshop includes meditation, an alcohol ink workshop with one small artwork (first timers are welcome! Materials are provided), explained how to write to set successful intentions, write your new moon wishes and intentions together, pre- celebration workshop, while playing live music. Instructor: SONOMI KOBAYASHI

A Japanese native, Sonomi Kobayashi is a New York-based artist and art educa- tor. She received a Four-Year Certificate from The Art Students League in Paint- ing, where she also studied printmaking and sculpture. Her work has been exhib- ited frequently in the US, Japan, and Europe.

She currently teaches at The Art Students League, as well as at Art Center for Seniors at Emanu-El, and occasionally teaches art to children and adults in NYC Parks community program since 2013. In 2019, the Mayoral Service Recognition Program awarded her a Certificate of Appreciation for her outstanding efforts.

Sonomi is also a certified Reiki Master and Access Bars Practitioner.

Come experience an intimate art workshop paired with a creativity-boosting afternoon tea, featuring restorative drinks and sweet & savory bites. Allow your intuition to lead the way to arranging a hand drawn floral composition using the methodology of ikebana with fresh florals as muse. 

This workshop comes in two parts led by the artist Yushin Kato and Chef Kumiko as part of the current art exhibition “A Flower Holds the Universe” at Jewell House.


Guests leave the workshop with their finished artworks and fresh botanicals to take home. Afternoon drinks and bites will be served during the workshop.

About the Artists:

Yushin Kato:

Yushin Kato is an interdisciplinary artist and graphic designer based in Brooklyn, New York. Her work explores the interconnection between the natural world and the internal landscape. Through intuitive drawing and painting  botanical imagery is used to reflect the mirrored systems found in nature, the body, and the cosmos. Originating from personal inquiry, Yushin’s work is a return to embodiment and meaning-making through the tactile act of creation. Florals are used as both symbols and systems, forms that hold memory and mystery. Each piece is a meditation on the balance between structure and surrender, the micro and macro, the seen and unseen.

Chef Kumiko:

Chef Kumiko is a Brooklyn-based catering chef whose culinary style blends wholesome cooking with artistry, drawing from the mindfulness of Japanese tradition and the cultural diversity of New York City. With a passion for holistic nourishment rooted in health-focused culinary education, and complemented by extensive experience in graphic design, she treats each dish as a canvas where flavor, culture, color, and wellness meet in harmony.

I spent my youth days admiring modern art and daydreaming. Plenty of years have passed since I moved to the US.
I started to study Reiki when we all had chaotic experiences in the US, especially in NYC in 2001. When I joined a group session for the very first time, as soon as a Reiki practitioner started run the Reiki, I felt a jolt of electric current and vision of a spark flying out of my chest area. I became more curious to find what that’s all about and eventually got certified as a Reiki master/teacher in 2002. Over the years, I have added Kundalini Reiki, Green Tara Seichim, Silver Violet Flame, and Access Bars and other energy works to my practice.

Celebrate the season with a cozy creative afternoon! We’ll be designing dried flower arrangements inside white pumpkins (about 6 inches in diameter and 6 inches tall, though sizes may vary) — a timeless fall decoration that works beautifully for both Halloween and Thanksgiving.

You’ll choose your own style:

🌾 a warm autumn centerpiece with a candle

🌾 or a charming pumpkin arrangement for your home

We’ll be working with a seasonal mix of dried and preserved flowers and foliage — pampas grass, textured stems, and natural accents — so your design will last beautifully all season long.

Hijiri owns and designs at Heartfish Press (http://www.heartfishpress.com), a studio located in Brooklyn, NY, specializing in letterpress printing and floral design. The studio offers a variety of letterpress prints, cards, and custom design services that involve creating floral designs using dried flowers.

Hijiri studied graphic design in Tokyo and pursued art direction at a university in San Francisco. After completing her studies, she worked as an art director at an advertising agency. In 2008, she moved to New York City and started working as a freelance designer. It was during this time that she discovered her passion for letterpress printing and the joy of crafting handmade items, which motivated her to establish her own business. Recently, Hijiri has been devoting a lot of her creative energy to exploring the art of dried flower arrangement, and she has developed a deep love for this craft along the way.

What is Reiki?

The word “Reiki” has already existed in the late 19th century in Japan to describe Spiritual Life Force Energy that is applied for healing.
Man called Dr. Usui established a method to gather that life force energy after rigorous spiritual and buddhism studies and practices. He had a healing clinic and helped a number of people. Dr. Usui and his disciples established the Reiki treatment method over the years.
Now, more and more people are attuned to Reiki and experiencing it. Because Reiki is not like an organized Religion, it’s interpreted much more freely and adapted to global cultures, it does feel more flexible.
Similar healing methods have been in existence for ages all over the world wherever human cultures exist.
Many manuals mention that Reiki is Uni-versal but plenty of people who experience Reiki feel Multi- versal realities. The way that accesses your past and future, places, other-worldly visions and sensations in a moment shows us that Reiki is about limitless potential.

JEWELL HOUSE is proud to present our exhibition featuring Yushin Kato, whose work emerged from an inward journey during a personal sabbatical—a deliberate pause to return to tactile, embodied creation after years immersed in the digital realm. This return to slowness, to nature, and to seeking meaning through making led to a deep exploration of the interconnectedness of all life, where opposites coexist in dynamic balance: light and dark, internal and external, chaos and order.

Through ink, graphite, gouache, and pencil, Yushin Kato explores the language of flowers not only as symbols of beauty, but as intricate maps of memory, healing, and inner knowing. Botanical forms, both abstract and symbolic, reveal the elegance and intelligence of the natural world. Flowers serve as both subject and metaphor, reflecting the cyclical, self-sustaining systems that shape both the physical and the metaphysical.

Rooted in intuition yet guided by contemplative study, each work engages with the historical, medicinal, or cultural resonance of its botanical subject. For Yushin Kato, drawing and painting become meditative acts—spaces where precision meets spontaneity, and structure meets surrender.

This exhibition embodies the spirit of JEWELL HOUSE: honoring the interconnectedness of all things and celebrating the profound symmetry between the universe within and the world without.

A Japanese native, Sonomi Kobayashi is a New York-based artist and art educa- tor. She received a Four-Year Certificate from The Art Students League in Paint- ing, where she also studied printmaking and sculpture. Her work has been exhib- ited frequently in the US, Japan, and Europe.

She currently teaches at The Art Students League, as well as at Art Center for Seniors at Emanu-El, and occasionally teaches art to children and adults in NYC Parks community program since 2013. In 2019, the Mayoral Service Recognition Program awarded her a Certificate of Appreciation for her outstanding efforts.

Sonomi is also a certified Reiki Master and Access Bars Practitioner.

This workshop includes meditation, an alcohol ink workshop with one small artwork (first timers are welcome! Materials are provided), explained how to write to set successful intentions, write your new moon wishes and intentions together, pre- celebration workshop, while playing live music. Please feel free to bring your own snacks, dinner, and drinks to enjoy the night.

Natalia will read the energy of people at the time and play music while we meditate and paint.

This practice will be a recurring event that will take place on every New Moon.

WORKSHOP FLOW

Instructor: SONOMI KOBAYASHI

A Japanese native, Sonomi Kobayashi is a New York-based artist and art educa- tor. She received a Four-Year Certificate from The Art Students League in Paint- ing, where she also studied printmaking and sculpture. Her work has been exhib- ited frequently in the US, Japan, and Europe.

She currently teaches at The Art Students League, as well as at Art Center for Seniors at Emanu-El, and occasionally teaches art to children and adults in NYC Parks community program since 2013. In 2019, the Mayoral Service Recognition Program awarded her a Certificate of Appreciation for her outstanding efforts.

Sonomi is also a certified Reiki Master and Access Bars Practitioner.

TIME: 11am-2pm

At this level the student is attuned and connected to the reiki source of energy. They will be capable of healing themselves and others who are present with you.
We cover history of Reiki and learn about applications of Reiki, receive an attunement and practice doing Reiki on yourself and others amongst participants. You will also learn to do your daily cleansing and the way you connect with Reiki. You leave class with a manual, first degree certificate including your lineage, trained to do Reiki on yourself, others, plants and animals.

What is Reiki?

The word “Reiki” has already existed in the late 19th century in Japan to describe Spiritual Life Force Energy that is applied for healing.
Man called Dr. Usui established a method to gather that life force energy after rigorous spiritual and buddhism studies and practices. He had a healing clinic and helped a number of people. Dr. Usui and his disciples established the Reiki treatment method over the years.
Now, more and more people are attuned to Reiki and experiencing it. Because Reiki is not like an organized Religion, it’s interpreted much more freely and adapted to global cultures, it does feel more flexible.
Similar healing methods have been in existence for ages all over the world wherever human cultures exist.
Many manuals mention that Reiki is Uni-versal but plenty of people who experience Reiki feel Multi- versal realities. The way that accesses your past and future, places, other-worldly visions and sensations in a moment shows us that Reiki is about limitless potential.

About Daria
Born in Kyoto, grew up in Yokohama, Japan.
I spent my youth days admiring modern art and daydreaming. Plenty of years have passed since I moved to the US.
I started to study Reiki when we all had chaotic experiences in the US, especially in NYC in 2001. When I joined a group session for the very first time, as soon as a Reiki practitioner started run the Reiki, I felt a jolt of electric current and vision of a spark flying out of my chest area. I became more curious to find what that’s all about and eventually got certified as a Reiki master/teacher in 2002. Over the years, I have added Kundalini Reiki, Green Tara Seichim, Silver Violet Flame, and Access Bars and other energy works to my practice.

An OSHO Zen Tarot session is not about fortune-telling or predicting the future.

It’s a space for tuning into one’s true inner voice and offering love to oneself.

The cards serve as messengers from the subconscious, delivering insights that go beyond logic.

Rather than analyzing from the mind, these sessions explore through inspiration, helping uncover what the subconscious is trying to communicate—what messages are needed in the present moment, and what outdated beliefs or thought patterns may be ready to be released.

The practitioner, Sonomi Kobayashi herself has experienced many moments of realization through OSHO Zen Tarot, letting go of unnecessary mental burdens and finding greater ease in moving forward.

What began as a personal journey gradually expanded as she practiced with friends and referrals. The responses were heartening—many shared that they felt “lighter,” “like things were shifting in a positive direction,” or “refreshed and clear-headed.”

These reactions inspired her to share this practice with even more people.

Now, she is offering sessions at Jewell House, inviting those who feel a connection to take part.

Her hope is to support individuals in taking time to listen to their subconscious, show themselves love, and discover hints for creating a freer, lighter version of their world. 💫

After honing her skills at prestigious British culinary schools (Tante Marie School of Cookery and Le Cordon Bleu London), she went on to work in hotel management and also built up a new business, Apple & Roses patisserie & café. Captivated by the rich nature of Azumino, Nagano, she relocated and discovered the healing power of traditional Japanese wild plants and herbs.

Embracing the philosophy of "No Nature No Life - We are part of nature," she established "Botapia," a specialty store focusing on caffeine-free medicinal herbal teas. 

Currently, as a certified Oriental Medicinal Tea Advisor/Specialist/Blender, she is dedicated to promoting healthy lifestyles utilizing the blessings of nature.
