WHAT IS SHIMENAWA?

Shimenawa are lengths of rice straw or hemp rope used for ritual purification in the Shinto religion of Japan and used to define sacred space. Shimenawa vary in diameter from a few centimeters to several meters, and are often seen festooned with ‘shide’ – traditional paper streamers.

Shimenawa can help cleans and start a year with fresh mind and energy.

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION INCLUDING LEARNING OBJECTIVES

We will make Shimenawa which is a traditional Japanese decoration for New Year.

Make an ornament with Mizuhiki string & decorate Shimenawa with fresh greenery.
